Taylor Fredrick is a senior majoring in agricultural education at the University of Missouri, and she is also a Teach Ag Ambassador. Taylor makes presentations to raise awareness of agricultural education as a career, with the goal of recruiting new agriculture teachers and retaining current teachers.
Charlie Sappington’s career in agricultural education spans some 32 years, and he has taught for the last 28 years at Cumberland High School in Illinois. Also serving as president of the National Association of Agricultural Educators, he talks about the current shortage of agriculture teachers. Through the Teach Ag Campaign, Charlie encourages young people to consider agricultural education as a career.

Kim Black, agriscience teacher and FFA advisor at Robert E. Aylor Middle School in Frederick County, Va., is a recipient of the Honorary American FFA Degree─Teacher. She says it is important for consumers to understand where their food comes from, so students at her school are introduced to agriculture with a six-week course in agriscience. Grayson Moyer and Megan Grose, co-presidents of the FFA chapter, talk about some of their favorite chapter activities, such as ag mechanics and plant science teams and leadership groups. When the National FFA Center moved from Alexandria, Va., to Indianapolis in 1998, thousands of historical FFA documents were turned over to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis for preservation. Two years later, the FFA archives at IUPUI’s University Library officially opened its doors. Some 150 file boxes of materials contain items ranging from correspondence to publications to photographs. Former FFA member and current Miss Mississippi Hannah Roberts was selected as the first runner-up to Miss America 2016. (Congratulations, Hannah!) Before the competition, Hannah recalled some of her high school experiences, such as participating in science fairs and serving on the FFA poultry judging team. She credits FFA with helping her develop leadership and public speaking skills. Hannah also talked about her Pages of Love book donation program.

The proud father explains how his daughter, Hannah, gained leadership skills through FFA, and he describes some of the programs available to Sumrall FFA members.

More than 1,200 people ran, crawled and scooted through 4.4 miles of a mud-covered obstacle course – but it was all for a good cause: to benefit the Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center in Covington, Ga. The goal of the family-focused event is to build character and provide a family bonding opportunity.
